Welcome to Ledger® Getting Started guide. This page will help you securely set up your Ledger hardware wallet and begin managing your crypto assets with confidence. Follow each step carefully to ensure maximum security for your funds.

What Is Ledger®?

Ledger® is a hardware wallet that keeps your cryptocurrency private keys offline. By storing keys in a secure chip, Ledger protects your assets from online threats such as malware, phishing, and hacks.

Ledger devices support thousands of cryptocurrencies and are trusted by millions of users worldwide.

Before You Begin

Please review the following important safety guidelines before setting up your Ledger device:

  • Only use a new, unused Ledger device
  • Always download software from Ledger.com
  • Never share your recovery phrase with anyone
  • Ledger Support™ will never ask for your recovery phrase
  • Perform setup in a private and secure environment

⚠️ If your device comes with a recovery phrase already written, do not use it.

Step 1: Start Your Ledger Device

  1. Connect your Ledger device to your computer or mobile phone
  2. Turn on the device
  3. On the screen, select “Set up as new device”

Your Ledger should be empty and unconfigured when first powered on.

Step 2: Download Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the official application used to manage your Ledger device and crypto accounts.

  1. Visit Ledger.com
  2. Download Ledger Live for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android)
  3. Install and open the application
  4. Select Get Started
  5. Choose your Ledger model

Step 3: Create a PIN Code

You will be prompted to create a PIN code:

  • Choose a 4–8 digit PIN
  • Confirm the PIN on your device

This PIN protects your Ledger from unauthorized physical access.

📌 After multiple incorrect attempts, the device will reset automatically.

Step 4: Back Up Your Recovery Phrase

Your Ledger device will display a 24-word recovery phrase.

Important Instructions:

  • Write each word down on paper
  • Keep the correct order
  • Check spelling carefully
  • Confirm the phrase directly on your Ledger device

Why This Is Critical:

  • The recovery phrase is the only backup of your wallet
  • Anyone with this phrase can access your assets
  • Ledger cannot recover it for you

🚫 Do not take photos
🚫 Do not store digitally
🚫 Do not share with anyone

Store it offline in a safe location.

Step 5: Verify Your Ledger Device

Ledger Live will now perform a genuine check:

  1. Connect your Ledger device
  2. Follow the instructions in Ledger Live
  3. Confirm authenticity on your device

This ensures your Ledger is original and secure.

Step 6: Install Cryptocurrency Apps

To manage cryptocurrencies, you must install apps on your Ledger device.

  1. Open Ledger Live
  2. Go to My Ledger
  3. Allow access on your Ledger device
  4. Install apps for the cryptocurrencies you use (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.)

Installing or removing apps does not affect your funds.

Step 7: Add Accounts in Ledger Live

  1. Go to Accounts
  2. Click Add account
  3. Select a cryptocurrency
  4. Open the corresponding app on your Ledger device
  5. Allow Ledger Live to synchronize

Repeat for each cryptocurrency.

Step 8: Receive Crypto Assets

  1. Select an account
  2. Click Receive
  3. Verify the address on your Ledger device screen
  4. Copy and share the verified address

✅ Always confirm addresses on the physical device.

Step 9: Send Crypto Assets

  1. Select an account
  2. Click Send
  3. Enter recipient address and amount
  4. Review transaction details
  5. Confirm the transaction on your Ledger device

All transactions require physical approval.

If Your Ledger Is Lost or Damaged

Your crypto assets are stored on the blockchain, not on the device.

You can restore access using:

  • A new Ledger device
  • Your 24-word recovery phrase

❌ Without the recovery phrase, funds cannot be recovered.

Security Best Practices

  • Keep your recovery phrase offline
  • Beware of phishing emails and fake websites
  • Always verify addresses on your Ledger screen
  • Keep Ledger Live and firmware updated
  • Consider advanced passphrase protection (optional)
